Frequently Asked Questions

  • How far in advance should I book my appointment?

We recommend all clients schedule their appointments at least a week in advance. Weekend and evening appointments tend to fill up quickly.  If you are interested in our vintage-inspired styles for a wedding, theatrical event or photo shoot, please give us as much advance notice as possible.

  • What if I just want a consultation?

We love meeting our clients and sharing visions for their hair and generally, when you schedule a salon or bridal service with us, the consultation is free.

  • When should I arrive?

Please plan to arrive about 5 to 10 minutes before your appointment time.  This will give you an opportunity to relax and to let your stylist know of any special requests or questions you might have.

  • What if I need to cancel my appointment at the last minute?

If you need to change or cancel your appointment for any reason, please let us know as soon as possible and at least within 48 hours. If you cancel your appointment with less than 48 hours remaining, we will assess a cancellation fee of 50%.  Please keep in mind that priority will be given to regularly scheduled appointments, and much as we’d like to, prompt rescheduling of cancelled bookings may not always be possible.

  • How will you know what my “best look” is if I don’t even know myself?

Life is an ever-evolving journey and your best look five years ago – or even five months ago — might not be your best look today. Start by asking yourself: what kind of person am I today? Risk-taking?  Steady and responsible?  Trend-setting?  Fun-loving?  Dramatic or sophisticated?

Once you’ve defined your unique personality, pragmatic questions come into play. Considering the texture, color and density of your hair, what kind of style is realistic? How much time do you want to spend on your hair?  Are you naturally talented at maintenance or do you like your hair to fall in place with hardly any work?  What is your hair budget?  Together, we’ll use these questions as a starting point to determine your most authentic look.

  • How long should I expect a haircut and/or hair color last?

The secret to the best-looking hair is maintenance. Wash-and-wear styles easily fall into place, but it is still important to come in for a trim every four to six weeks. You can expect your color to last an average of four to six weeks as well, and highlighting is typically looks well for six to 12 weeks.

  • Do I need to bring photos of what I’m looking for?

Photos are great as an inspiration-starter. But a haircut or hair color that looks perfect on a model who may not have your facial shape or coloring might not be your best look.  As a result, we take any image you care to share as a creative starting point and then tailor the look so that it more precisely fits your vision.

  • My hair looks great in the salon but the look doesn’t last. What if I don’t want a two-hour wrestling match with a blow dryer each morning?

With the right haircut and product, any type of hair can be easily styled for minimum maintenance. We’ll even show you ways to dress up your hairstyle for times when you go out and can spend a little more time on it.

  • You do so much vintage-inspired hair. Do you create modern looks as well?

Absolutely. A large part of our salon is devoted to everyday inspirations. Our hair stylists are very versatile we love to create easy to manage looks.

  • My wedding’s in a month and I love vintage-inspired styles. Does my hair need to be a certain length or texture?

You’ll be pleasantly surprised at what we can achieve in creating vintage-inspired looks for all hair lengths and textures. Several weeks before your wedding date, bring in a photo of your dress and let us know what hair accessories you wish to wear on the big day. We’ll sketch out a fabulous and unique vintage-inspired style to compliment your dress and complete your look. Then get ready for all the “oooohs” and “awwws.”

  • My entire bridal party needs hair styling for my upcoming wedding. Can you come to my location?

Yes, we’d be happy to accommodate you. Our team can handle up to 12 members of your bridal party for hair and makeup. If you prefer for us to travel to your location within 15 miles of our studio, a one-time travel fee of $150 will be added to your total. Should your location exceed 15 miles, we will calculate your travel fee after receiving the address of your location. If you are able to set aside the time to enjoy our services at the studio, no travel fee will be assessed.

  • I have relaxed hair and would love to go back to my natural texture. Can you guide me with this transition?

We love and embrace healthy, natural hair that looks great without harsh chemicals and damaging flat irons. We can restore your natural curl pattern with the right hairstyle and the right moisturizing products. A few changes in your hair routine can make you start feeling like a natural woman all over again.

  • I got my hair lightened a few times and it always ends up looking brassy. What does it take to truly look like a natural blond?

The reason natural blonds look so beautiful is because their hair embodies many different shades of blond at the same time. Our color system is gentle and efficient and is also customized to each individual. We use different techniques such as balayage or highlighting to make your hair shine. To keep it looking vibrant, we’ll give you suggestions on color cooling shampoos and the correct color sealing conditioner so your hair will look great out of the salon, even weeks after your salon treatment.

  • I love fantasy hair but my current stylist looks at me in horror when I suggest it. Are you comfortable creating alternative looks?

You only have one life so why not take some risks? Vibrant colors are very exciting and the magic is to know how to artistically place them so that they are esthetically pleasing. If you’re not ready to shake up your life with complete fantasy color, we can also add little peek-a-boo lights or panels that can easily be hidden in conservative workplaces, simply by changing the parting of your hair. And here’s the best part: the colors we use are ammonia-free and add conditioning to your hair. After weeks of vibrancy, it fades gently into gorgeous pastels.

  • I’ve colored my hair for years and now it’s looking dull and faded out. How do you prevent that from happening?

As women age, hair texture changes. That’s why it’s important for color formulas to always be aligned to your current hair condition. It’s a good idea to revisit your color formula and regularly reassess, so the hair color never becomes stale or boring. You also want your colorist to stay away from color ingredients that are too harsh and cause your hair to be over-processed. At Antje Kastner Studio, we know what works and how to make your color look brilliant and non-faded.

  • My hair is thick and gets so frizzy, particularly in humid weather. How can you work with that kind of texture?

Too often, we try to make our hair do things it just doesn’t want to do. Why not embrace the changes your hair goes through with each season rather than fighting it? We can help connect you to the right products and haircut for your specific hair texture. Listening to and respecting your hair is the best way to keep your look authentic. Our motto is: don’t fight it, work with it.
